We’re Green and we certainly understand the popular use of the term Green and phrases like being Green so we use them too. But the reality is that although we’re using terms like Green today the practices that make us Green are nothing new. For example, we’ve been recycling waste oil to heat our maintenance shops in Chicago, Iron Mountain and Marshfield, beginning in Marshfield over 15 years ago.
Roehl’s relentless pursuit of operational efficiency while maintaining superior service standards drives our strategic plan. But our customers benefit as well with better service at competitive rates and more stable pricing.
Our value of “Cost and Quality Awareness – we’ll drive out waste and do it right the first time – every time!” requires us to avoid over-consumption and wasteful use of resources.
An EPA certified SmartWaySM partner (since the inception of the SmartWaySM program), Roehl has committed to the latest fuel‐efficient equipment and operational standards that reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from truck exhaust. Roehl has received the agency’s SmartWaySM Award of Excellence for the past three years in a row.
Here are a few of the steps we take to control costs, conserve fuel and reduce emissions:
- Roehl helps control fuel costs, for example, with sophisticated fuel optimization software that allows us to take advantage of the lowest pump prices in route.
- Our widespread use of drip heaters and auxiliary power units (APU’s) reduces the need to idle for comfort or power.
- Operational thoughtfulness regarding waste reduction is further evidenced by the synchronization of company to truck communications so that message traffic is received when the truck is stopped and turned off. This may not seem too important until you realize that the most common practice is for companies to flow their message traffic to the truck without restriction causing numerous stops, pullovers, and idle while drivers are responding to that message traffic. The result is an enormous waste of fuel and corresponding increase in emissions as all of those trucks are slowed down and then repowered after dealing with the messages.
- A proprietary fuel conservation program, Roehl MPG—TIPSS, teaches driving techniques to improve fuel mileage. Drivers, fleet managers and other support staff all attend this program.
- Drivers receive a monthly scorecard regarding key performance metrics, one of which is their mpg performance. Drivers also receive updates on their mpg performance each time they refuel the truck. With this feedback and coaching from their fleet managers our drivers are able to strive towards greater fuel efficiency and further emissions reductions.
- Our drivers receive recognition for their superior fuel efficiency through our quarterly MPG award program and our unique American Idle program which is also aimed at promoting fuel efficiency.
- Our Green Initiative extends well beyond our trucks to office and shop staff and facilities as well. We continually seek out and implement power and waste reduction technologies and techniques.
In 2007 Roehl Transport avoided emissions amounting to 154,905 tons of carbon dioxide, 14.999 tons of particulate matter and 529.9 tons of oxides of nitrogen (as determined using the SmartWaySM Fleet Model).
Let us show you how we apply the Power of Red when it comes to being green.
